Mini-Professional Development Sessions

The following videos are a mini professional development series that helps science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and career and technical education (CTE) educators with the knowledge and skills they need to create equitable learning environments (ELE) for all students. The series focuses on four key indicators of an equitable learning environment: normalize, empower, inclusive, and relevant (NEIR).

Experience #1: Building Equitable Learning Environments

This session provides CTE and STEM educators a professional development experience in a new model that builds educational equity in classrooms and schools. This video can take 20 minutes or two hours, depending on your goals. Use independently or with groups of educators to understand and discuss how to better meet the academic and social/emotional needs of any student in an increasingly diverse world. Highly empowered students reported better grades, fewer behavioral incidents and increased extracurricular participation.

Experience #2: Building Equitable Learning Environments: Normalize

This second professional development experience for Career and Technical Education (CTE) and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators focuses on the first of four N.E.I.R indicators of an equitable learning environment: Normalize. Based on research related to a sense of belonging, education can overcome traditional gender biases and program misinformation by "normalizing" these critical career opportunities to all students beginning at an early age.

Experience #3: Building Equitable Learning Environments: Empower

This is the third of five mini-professional development videos to support Career and Technical Education CTE) educators to create equitable learning environments in their schools and classrooms to improve student academic, personal, and social success. This 20 minute video focuses on the second of the four NEIR indicators: Empower. Student empowerment is predicted by equitable power use by teachers, positive teacher-student relationships, and a sense of community in the classroom.

What does creating an inclusive environment look and feel like? This video summarizes the previous NEIR indicators (normalize and empower) and introduces the concept of a deep welcome. Deep welcome is the experience students and educators feel when they are in their classroom feeling safe, comfortable, included, and loved. But how do you create that experience?

Experience #5: Building Equitable Learning Environments: Relevant

This is the fifth and final video in the Professional Experience series on creating Equitable Learning Environments in Career and Technical Education (CTE). This video focuses on two important ideas: ensuring your team of educators have the capacity and commitment to ensure equity is accessible for all STEM students and to learn about the fourth indicator of the NEIR model: Normalize.
